Do What You Love With Passion!

It's been said that if we do what we love, it stops being a job and becomes a passion. I love to write as much as I love to design jewelry. With this blog, I will share both with you!

Bead Hoarders Blog Hop

BEAD HOARDERS BLOG HOP

Saturday, July 20th, 2013

Hosted by Lori Anderson of Bead Soup Cafe

Dear Friend,

I enjoy blog hops hosted by Lori Anderson, as she has great ideas and creates them with care and thoughtfulness. Lori's theme in today's blog hop was to direct us to that hidden cache wrapped in linen and tucked into the back of the bottom drawer in the night stand...oh...well, maybe it was under that loose floorboard in the attic behind the vintage trunk filled with lace, sheet music and grandma's diary?

We needed to recover those beads today, the ones that are seldom relinquished to our design tables, rarely made into jewelry or priced for sale in our shops. Yes, I speak of those little treasures, the ones we may have forgotten to mention to anyone that we had purchased. "Oh, did I forget to tell you about these, are you sure?" Hmm, clearly a mere slip of the mind! Yes, these are The Hoarded Ones, and we are the ones who hoard them.

Unlike many beading friends, I have not been designing jewelry for years. My background is in the study of color, in fabrics and textiles, interior design, seamstress, photography and floral industry. I appreciate how these things now serve me in designing jewelry, for the eye looks for the same technical knowledge regardless of form and function.

I begin today's blog by sharing with you that as much as I have become addicted to beads, I do not have a private stash! I buy what I love and use everything to create pieces that are generally strong and bold. My pieces are designed for the woman who is confident and powerful and knows it! I want her to feel empowered wearing jewelry by LAREN DEE DESIGNS.

I love to color outside the lines and will usually begin a design by actually stopping for a moment. I will breathe deeply, clear my mind and say a little prayer for inspiration. I love whimsy, too, and look for opportunities to incorporate it into designs.

If fact, I consider that my studio is a sandbox. It's the only thing with walls because I hate vacuuming sand out of the carpet. Well, okay, I hate to clean, period. The little girl within, with brown hair and hazel eyes, loves to play with beads of all kinds, sari silk, wire, findings and tools. Like a painter who begins with brushes, oils and a stark white canvas, I am thrilled to choose an assortment of beads hoping creativity flows with complete abandon!!

Necklace in Millefiori Style

Red millefiori, half inch tube beads made in Japan, caught my imagination the moment I found them. I enjoy the feminine softness of the millefiori (many flowers) and the intensity of the warm red background is lovely.

I paired twenty-eight beads with a millefiori rectangular glass focal with gold foil. Raku beads from Duane Collins of Elements Pottery work in easily with their red/gold/purple fiery glow. I surrounded those with purple ceramic beads and purple lampwork beads. Faceted red carnelian beads and small purple Czech beads are accents used in both bead drop and necklace construction.

The bead drop measures 3.5 inches in length and is permanently attached to the necklace that has a length of 28 inches. The beaded portion of the necklace is strung with tarnish-free flexible wire and attached to goldtone cable link chain with lobster clasp.

Hints of goldtone flat metal spacers and metal end caps mirror the gold in both focal and chain. The focal bead carries the reds and purples very well, with small touches of greens, yellow and blues in millefiori patterns.

My heartfelt thanks to Lori, for allowing me to share something of myself with you today and a necklace I greatly enjoyed designing. If I had a stash of beads behind grandma's trunk in the attic, these would have been with them!
